Whenever possible, your Dr. Tamer El Zalabany Specialised Clinics bariatric surgeon uses minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for your procedure. That means your doctor uses very small incisions and special surgical tools—so you may benefit from smaller scars, less pain, a quicker recovery, and a lower risk of complications.
Bariatric surgery contributes to weight loss in two main ways:
- Restriction Surgery is used to physically limit the amount of food the stomach can hold, which limits the quantity of calories you can eat.
- Malabsorption Surgery is used to shorten or bypass part of the small intestine, which reduces the quantity of calories and nutrients the body absorbs.
1- Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve surgery, also called sleeve gastrectomy, helps you lose weight by making your stomach smaller.
During this procedure, your surgeon permanently removes a large part of your stomach. Your stomach is reduced to the size and shape of a small banana. This surgery doesn’t affect your small intestine.
Afterward, you’ll feel full more quickly from eating small amounts of food.
2- Mini-Gastric-Bypass (MGB)
It is very similar to the traditional bypass but only has one connection (single anastomosis) to the small intestine.
MGB is a mal-absorptive and restrictive procedure.
Instead of a small banana like tube with the gastric sleeve, the mini gastric bypass surgery procedure creates a narrow tube-like pouch, restricting the amount of food that can be taken in at one time. The small intestine is then attached or looped to the new pouch approximately 180 cm from its starting point. This placement bypasses the part of the intestines that allows for less nutrients, calories, and fats to be absorbed by the body, causing weight loss.
